What 9D Breathwork actually is
9D Breathwork is a guided breath journey in which conscious connected breathing is layered over nine dimensions of sound, delivered through headphones so the experience surrounds you completely. Spoken guidance, 8D spatial audio, binaural beats, isochronic tones, solfeggio and 432 Hz tuning, subliminal affirmation, somatic cues, live instruments and deliberate silence are composed together like a film score for the nervous system.
Your breath does the work; the sound holds the space and keeps the thinking mind occupied long enough for the body to let go. Sessions run ninety minutes and move through intention, preparation, the journey itself and a slow landing, held privately in your own space in Ibiza rather than in a room full of strangers.
A short history of the practice
The breathing itself is old. Rhythmic, intentional breath control sits at the centre of yogic pranayama and of contemplative traditions across Asia and the Middle East, practised for millennia as a way to change state without changing anything else. Its modern therapeutic form took shape in the 1970s, when Leonard Orr formalised Rebirthing and Stanislav and Christina Grof developed Holotropic Breathwork as a legal, drug-free route to the non-ordinary states they had been researching clinically.
Through the 1990s and 2000s, physiological research into heart-rate variability, vagal tone and CO₂ tolerance gave those practices a measurable language, and by the 2010s breathwork had moved firmly into mainstream performance and recovery culture through figures such as Wim Hof and methods like SOMA.
9D Breathwork is the newest branch of that family, emerging around 2019–2021 out of Australia when a small group of facilitators and sound designers began pairing conscious connected breathing with studio-produced, multi-layered soundtracks instead of a live playlist. Because facilitator training was built online from the start, it spread internationally in a handful of years rather than a generation, which is why a modality barely five years old is now offered on most continents.
Where it is most widely practised
Australia and New Zealand remain the heartland, with London and the wider UK, the Netherlands, Germany and the Nordics forming the strongest European base, alongside a large following across the United States and Canada. Beyond the cities, it has taken root wherever retreat culture is strong: Bali, Tulum and Costa Rica, Dubai, and the Balearics.
Ibiza is one of the densest concentrations of facilitators in Europe, and the character of the practice here is distinct. Rather than studio classes, it is delivered privately in villas, on yachts, in finca retreats and as the closing ceremony of longer wellness programmes, often for people who have come to the island precisely to decompress.
Who this work is for
9D Breathwork tends to attract people carrying a high cognitive load and very little unstructured time. Founders, executives, medics, traders and anyone living in sympathetic overdrive use it as a nervous-system reset. Creatives, musicians, DJs and writers use it to move through blocks and to come down cleanly after intense periods of output.
It is widely chosen by people mid-transition, whether that is separation, bereavement, relocation, a career change or new parenthood, and by those who understand their situation intellectually but still feel it stuck in the body. Couples book it to reconnect without conversation doing all the work, retreat groups use it as a shared threshold moment, athletes and seasonal workers use it for recovery, and many guests come simply because talking has already been useful and they now want something somatic instead.
