What a couples massage actually is
Two therapists, two tables, one room, at the same time. Each of you receives a full individual treatment with your own pressure, your own problem areas and your own choice of style, and the only thing shared is the setting and the timing. One of you can have deep pressure on a locked shoulder while the other has something slow and sedative.
The difference from booking two separate appointments is atmosphere and logistics. The room is set up as one space, the sessions start and end together, and nobody spends an hour waiting for the other to finish. On a terrace at dusk or in a villa suite, it becomes an occasion rather than an errand.
A short history of the practice
Shared treatment is not new. Communal bathing and massage cultures — the Roman thermae, the Ottoman hamam, the Japanese onsen, the Nordic sauna — all treated bodily care as something done alongside other people rather than in private.
The specific format of two people treated simultaneously in a private room is a modern hospitality invention. It emerged with destination spa culture in the 1980s and 1990s, first in North American resorts and Caribbean hotels, where it was built around honeymoons and anniversaries, and spread quickly through Asian resort spas.
The private, in-residence version is more recent again, arriving with the growth of villa and yacht travel in the last twenty years. Removing the spa corridor, the robes and the shared relaxation lounge turns out to matter: the treatment is the same, but the experience around it is entirely different.
Where it is most widely practised
It is a staple of resort destinations worldwide, strongest in the Caribbean, the Maldives, Bali, Thailand and Mexico, and standard on the menu of nearly every five-star hotel spa in Europe and the Middle East. Honeymoon and anniversary travel drives much of the global demand.
In Ibiza the pattern is different. Very little of our couples work is honeymoon-related. It is booked by partners on a short break with a fixed number of good hours, by friends travelling together, by mothers and daughters, and by business partners closing a week. The private villa format suits an island where most guests are not staying in hotels at all.
Who this work is for
Couples on a short stay are the obvious group, particularly those who want one properly restorative thing in a trip otherwise made of boats and dinners. Anniversaries, birthdays and proposals account for a steady share, and we are happy to coordinate quietly with whoever is organising the surprise.
It is equally popular with people who are not couples at all. Friends travelling together book it constantly, as do family members, and it removes the awkwardness of one person disappearing for an hour. Business groups use it as a way of ending an intensive few days.
It also works well when one person is far more experienced with massage than the other. The nervous first-timer is not left alone in a treatment room, and the regular still gets the pressure they want.
Who should speak to us first
Each of you should tell us separately about pregnancy, recent surgery, injuries, blood-thinning medication, clotting disorders, high blood pressure, cancer treatment, skin conditions or allergies to nut-based oils. Preferences and health notes are handled individually, not as a couple.
Pregnancy does not prevent booking: we simply assign a pregnancy-trained therapist for that person and run Pre-Natal Massage alongside whatever the other has chosen. If a room cannot comfortably hold two tables, we will suggest adjacent rooms or consecutive sessions instead.
